Moin Khan Advise to Quetta Gladiators

The Quetta Gladiators claimed the PSL championship in 2019 with an eight-wicket victory over Peshawar Zalmi at the National Bank Cricket Arena. They previously reached the finals in the first two seasons of the tournament in 2016 and 2017. Prior to their disappointing performance in the 2020 edition, where they were eliminated in the league stage for the first time in the tournament’s history, the Gladiators established themselves as one of the stronger teams in the PSL. However, they have yet to finish among the top four teams since that time.

The Quetta Gladiators will kick off their journey in the 8th edition of the PSL on February 15th, taking on the Multan Sultans at the Multan Cricket Stadium. They aim to reclaim their pre-2020 form.

Before the start of the tournament, PCB Digital had a chat with the head coach of the Gladiators, Moin Khan, to discuss the impact of the PSL.

Khan. Khan: Quetta Gladiators and the PSL have played an inspiring role for cricket in the region. Despite a lack of facilities in that part of the country and unfavourable weather conditions in the winters, there has been a spike in interest for cricket here, with local talent emerging due to the association with the Quetta Gladiators brand.

Indeed, Quetta Gladiators have been instrumental in promoting and nurturing local talent. The inclusion of players like Bismillah Khan, Abdul Wahid Bangalzai, and Abdul Nasir in the team demonstrates the impact the franchise has had on the development of cricket in Balochistan. By providing these players with a platform to showcase their skills on a national stage, Quetta Gladiators have helped to create role models and inspire a new generation of cricketers in the region. Khan: Sarfaraz Ahmed has been an invaluable asset to the Quetta Gladiators. He has both excelled personally and as the team’s captain. He is a savvy captain and has demonstrated this through the Gladiators’ impressive win record over the seven seasons of the PSL. We can expect a more energetic performance from Sarfaraz, as he aims to build on the success of his Player of the Series award in the recent series against New Zealand.

Q. What factors are considered when choosing a playing XI and what is your coaching philosophy?

Khan. When selecting the playing XI, we closely examine the match conditions and work together as a team to make a decision. We also involve our owners, as they have a vested interest in the success of the franchise as its financiers. I desire for my team to perform with boldness on the field, as this is expected in this format of the game. If we don’t play fearlessly, we will constantly face pressure. It is also crucial for us to have a clear approach.
